2016 Syrah, Sonoma Valley
Our 2016 Syrah is a true beauty with its deep purple hue and decadent aromas of boysenberry, black olive and tobacco. By mouth, the wine gives flavors of butterscotch, black cherry, vanilla. A very present acid structure offers a glimpse of the dark fruit that lingers beneath.
Syrah tolerates a great temperature range—hot to cool—yielding flavors to match the season. This vintage shows the red fruit more than the blue fruit, suggesting warm but not hot temperatures during the growing season. A number of cool nights helped maintain natural acidity imparting a rich spicy note. Cold soaks were extended to 5 days which allowed for gentle extraction of full flavor and color. Fermentation temperatures hit the mid 80’s, and we kept the cuvée warm after fermentation to continue to extract flavor, tannins and color from the skins. The wine was barrel aged in small French oak cooperage (10% new) and American oak (25%) for 20 months and bottled in April 2018.
